What is a music video?
A music video is a short story accompanied by a pre-excysting song to enhance the experience of the song.
What is the purpose of a music video?
The purpose of music videos are to show a story that is being told through out the song to give the song more of a meaning giving visual context.
The History of Music videos
Music videos were often made for MTV because of this it made it easier for artists to be able to promote there music whilst being on tour..
Looking in to Music videos there is only really two different groups that had caused the begging of this idea that you could create a story to go along with your music creating a revolutionary idea.
Queen/ The Beatles
A lot of people think that Boeheim Rhapsody was the first music video that was created, but they would be wrong. People such as Bing Crosby, Billie Holiday and The Beatles all had short films created to go along with there music. Music videos came around several years before Boeheim Rhapsody was released .
MTV
When MTV was created this gave an outlet for artists and record companies to really get music to a wider audience, this gave people more of a drive to create music videos. Because of MTV the way that we listen to music now is wildly different, they also helped with some of the most significant moments in pop culture.
The Initial Purposes of Music Videos
When it comes to music videos there are three very important aspects that really create a great video. The first thing that goes in to a good music video is:
Image construction- Image construction uses the idea of a house the same way that you need different aspects to build a house you need things such as colour, photoshop and words this is to help portray a specific image or idea to reach a niche group of people.
Artstic Statement or Artefact- An artistic statement can include a large variety of work including compassions of music or an art piece this can be shown in many different ways such as putting a twist on to your work that you do in a lot of work such as DJ Khaled, this can also be done in a statement giving an idea about what the piece of work is about and giving a full understanding for the audience.
Synergy- The used this as a way to promote other products such as films and in adverts for specific products. You can see this through out time with songs like 'My heart will go on' that was in Titanic, but it was made for the film so that they can go hand in hand to promote each other.
Reasons People Make Music Videos
Label Strategies
Some of the jobs in Label strategies includes marketing, distribution, production and enforcement of copyright/ownership of music. There are three different types of labels they include:
Major Labels- They focus on things such as the revenue of the product, have a large budget for things such as videos and merch for the artist, they also may be able to create art with big artists to help promote the artist you can see this with Black Pink in Du Du Du.
Independent Labels- They are less focussed on getting revenue with smaller budget so that they have to be more creative this also means that they might have a director that is specialised in one genre such as Grime, we can see this in IBTYLGOTD- Arctic Monkeys
Artist Produced- Because of how easy it is to make music now being self-produced is becoming more prevalent. It also has become cheaper so that more people can do it, this also gives the artist more of a chance to be creative with their work we are able to see this in No Good- Battle Tapes.
Artist Research
Ruth B started releasing music in 2013, she started her on vine and uses a large verity of emotions that can be felt through out her music. Her music has consisted of Hip-Hop, Rap and Alternative Pop as separate genres she likes to have her audience emerged with the song and try to captivate the audience. She does different songs and they tend to focus on memories and creating music that a lot of people can relate to, they have done this in Dandelions a song that she created to 'serves as a reminder of all the sweetness a romance should have'.
Sam Fischer began releasing music in 2016 with a song called Lean, he is a member of Fourth Echelon and is a character featured in Tom Clancy's Elite Squad. Sam Fisher focuses on R&B, soul, neo-soul, pop and rock. The music that he creates is rather focused on different emotions that is rather relatable for the people that are lessening to his music that is being shared by so many people this can be found in a lot of his songs such as This City. "The day I wrote this song I was having a tough time. I had become disillusioned with my personal identity, my connection to music and with LA in general"
The camera work that has been used in 'This City' is very cool and different as they use this to show the different parts of his life and how he has struggled.
Taylor Swift has been making music since 2006, she started her career with a song called Tim McGraw. She has an exclusive trait that she is well known for, this is she is a person with a very worm personality, but she also ignores the people trying to put her down she does this by succeeding with the music that she is creating and not letting anyone stop her do whatever she wants, she also tries to inspire people to do what they want in life. Her music consists of many different genres such as Country, Pop, Country Pop, Rock, Indie Pop and Folk music. In her music she focusses on sadness and how the world can contribute to heart ache and suffering you can see this in Knew You Were Trouble 'Since the song is probably about John Mayer, this could be a reference to the CMT Awards, the night that inspired The Story of Us, during a live show Swift explained that during that award night the ex-boyfriend was only seats away from him and this explains very clearly these two lines: at the CMT Awards ("when he's next to [her]") it had been a while since their breakup ("he's long gone").
Tracking
In music videos you can use equipment to help make your product good quality, when making music videos you can use tracking this is a technique used to follow one or more object that is moving. This can be best created by using a gimble also known as a Steadicam, a gimble is a type of equipment that can be held and creates a smooth and steady shot when you want to create a shot like this. You can see in music videos such as Fat Les - Vindaloo they have created a Parady of another song.
Gimble/ Steadicam

Music Video Styles
There is a difference between music styles and music genre, music genre is the type of music that is being played by the artist and the style of music is how you express yourself with in the genre that your music is in.
- Performance-base -This style focuses more on an artist preforming in an isolation lay out or gig scenario, this can be better off for the artist as there is not a piacular narrative and gives them more freedom in what they want to do and can be more fun this can also be cost effective as they aren't spending a lot of money on extravagant videos. There is also a selection of camera angles focussing on the paraformers.
- Narrative-based -This type of style is very structured this is because they base everything off of a storyline, this would mean that the band/ artist will either feature throughout the video or there may be some extras, but this doesn't happen every time this can mean that the artist won't be in the video at all.
- Interpretive -The style that is placed under interpretive aims to try and represent/ portray the lyrics of the song and giving it another idea of what the song is all about but doing it in a visual way so that people can have their own ideas but it can be perceived better by people that may be hard of hearing or don/t speak the language that the song is sung in and there for it is trying to reach out to more people and trying to get a larger audience.
- Animated -Animated is a kind of "blanketed" term that can be referred to as different styles of animation that can include stop motion and CGI, there are different reasons for wanting to use these different types of animation this could be because of the band can't make it to shots due to things like touring or there could be another reason that the band don't want to be shown such as the band Gorillaz as they are a fully animated band but don't want to be shown.
- Surrealist- Surrealism is a term that is used when referring to the art movement, the idea behind this is that the art that has been created is 'non-sensical' of fantastic and is very far from what reality is, the music videos that have used this type of music video get comments that the videos are unsettling or strange. An idea of this would be Soundgarden's 1994 'Black Hole Sun'.
- Pastiche- A pastiche is where you take/ borrow an idea from one person's work, recreating it in a way that may not have the same affect that it was intentionally made for weather it was serious it may be out of context and recreated in a disrespectful way. An example of this would be 'Walk' by Foo Fighters.
- Parody- A 'parody' also known as a 'Spoof' generally mocks whatever the source material and doesn't take it's self seriously, it can also be used to mock the subject that it's based upon, this can be seen it the music video 'All the Small Things' by Blik 182
- Homage-A 'homage' is similar to a 'pastiche', but you generally pay tribute or respect the artform that you are going to be referencing this can be done with many different things this doesn't always have to be just done in music videos. This has been used in 'Buddy Holly' by the Wheezers.
Symbolic Techniques
Symbolic techniques are different ways of showing a hidden meaning to what you are doing, this can be done in many different ways such as facial expressions, gestures, poses and subliminal imagery. This is often in the background or subtly hidden. A couple of instances can be seen in music videos, this is when people use the hand gesture of the eye of providence also known as the all-seeing eye such as in the music video of 'Dark Horse' by Katy Perry. Another aspect of this that is slightly different is in the music video from Wiz Khalifa for 'Black & Yellow' as the video acutely features imagery of Baphomet this is a deity that is worshipped by the occult.
Technical Conventions
Trope- a significant or recurring theme, musical genres often feature tropes or cliches witch have helped to define that particular style of music. This is done so that the audience can become familiar with a genre and get used to recognising the different themes/ conventions. This makes the audience the audience comfortable with the format and will help them to except the video in to that genre.
This song does fit with the trope of every love song as it is always that they need each other and then the video has two people who are in love or used to be in love. This is my idea for a trope.
Colour Theory
Colour can affect us emotionally or psychologically and often subliminally create harmony or tension, accentuate a key theme or represent a character's traits in the music video. The idea behind this is that you are supposed to feel something based off a colour such as the colour red it represents anger, passion, warmth and sacrifice or danger. On the other side you have blue which, represents sadness, calm and cool, this all has a role to play when it comes to how you want the idea behind your music video.
Colour can be used in two ways in a music video, you can use it as in the way that the video is acutely styled such as the clothes, props and scenery. In the other hand you could use colour correction in pots-production such as making the whole video in black and white changing the pigment in the video this is called monochrome. By reducing the colour palette, you can imply a certain feeling or atmosphere within a music video.
Certain colours can create an association or meaning with in a video.
Colour Usage
Blue- this suggests that it is kind of cool and associates itself with being confident and infinite.
Audience Classification
Within the media industry there are a lot of projects that rely very heavily on the key factor such as the audience. There are four different types of aspects that you will need to look at that creates the audience.
First of all you have Social Economics- This is science supported research which is the research into activity outside of economic parameters. Using technology, partaking in an outdoor hobby and revising for an exam are all factors taken into consideration instead of 'play hard' are mostly in upper class, linking in closely with those who would attend 'Oxbridge' Whereas those who seem more engaged in their most recent Snapchat (overusing their smartphones) can be selected anywhere from middle class to below poverty line by showing signs of 'procrastination'.
Second of all you have Ethnography - Researchers usually observe what's going on around them to gain ethnographic data whilst taking a 'back-seat' role. The idea is to cover every aspect of that group/subject/topic and find the best solution moving forward whilst dealing with any problems that were raised through the study. For example, a theme park is observed over the course if a year, the team take into account the company's environment, experiences and habits all very seriously. After the year is over, the observers present a list of problems identified throughout the many operational sectors of the theme park. One of these quick fixes, is the use of 'multi-skilling' with employees working in many different sectors to provide a better quality of service - which may not work sometimes.
Third of all you have Psychographics- This is putting facts and statistics away which collate to acquiring quantitively research. The Psychographics method focuses on people's humanity rather than the checks and balances of their livelihoods. For example, for certain people this may relate to them:
- Goes back to Bracknell and Wokingham College
- Is between 16 to 18 years old
- Has sufficient exam arrangements
These ones can relate to other people, mainly most people:
- Dreams on getting into the sports industry
- Enjoys listening to dance music
- Won't stop talking about their goldfish
Lastly you have Geodemographic- These factors indicate that your selected audience is different on the basis of their current location. A person's taste in fashion, lifestyle and what they call 'entertainment' all determine opposed to a well done-up household in Windsor, what is your immediate reaction? What ideas are you thinking? There is a reason why Southern England is getting more populated than The North, the statements such as 'lower house prices'. and 'cheaper food/drink' depicting that The North is an epicentre for 'The Poor'. of England including Scotland and Wales.
The theme that I would like in media is country pop, this music would belong to people throughout the ages of 12-30
Camera Movement
As well as movements you also have the lens movement to zoom in and out, you can do two types of movement you can choose to do it when you have the camera in your hand or you can choose to do it in post production with different ways of editing.

Use of sound
You have two different types of sound you have Diegetic and non diegetic, the diegetic sound does sound like it is coming in from in the scene or in the kind of 'universe' . Non diegetic sound is extraneous or has been added for affect such as music, voice overs and narration.
This music video is non diegetic as she is lip syncing to the music that isn't there.
This is a diegetic video due to the idea that it is a live performance.
